Community Engagement Core publishes comic book promoting safer fish consumption along the Lower Cape Fear River

The Duke Superfund Research Center’s Community Engagement Core is proud to present ‘Cape Fear Kids Go Fishing’, a short comic book story following children in southeastern North Carolina learning about fish consumption advisories, how to prepare and eat fish from the lower Cape Fear River in a safe fashion and more. The CEC would like to thank our many community partners who have worked with us since 2016 to try and promote safer fish consumption in the region. If you or your organization would like to obtain printed copies of the comic book, please get in touch at SuperfundCEC@duke.edu.

Since 2016, the Community Engagement Core has worked with community partners in the lower Cape Fear River Basin to increase knowledge of current fish consumption advisories and to encourage safer choices when preparing and eating fish caught from the river. This coalition of community partners conducted research on fish consumption patterns and the most effective messaging and channels of communication to inform and elicit safer choices. The results were then used to inform the development of culturally appropriate materials and a targeted outreach campaign – Stop, Check, Enjoy!
