Dr. Zackary Johnson is named the Arthur P. Kaupe Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology. Honoring the memory of her late husband, Sandra Taylor Kaupe, a well-recognized coastal conservationist in her home state of Florida, established the named assistant professorship at the Duke Marine Laboratory, which is part of the Nicholas School of the Environment, to advance the role of molecular sciences in environmental research and education. In recognizing the gift, Dean Chameides said “As an avid outdoorswoman with a lifelong love of the marine environment, Sandy Kaupe appreciates the challenges facing conservationists and resource managers today,” Chameides added. “She understands the critical role modern molecular technologies can play in studies of the biology of marine organisms and in developing sound strategies for the management and protection of our marine resources.”
