Visiting Dr. Tatiana Ilyina of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg Germany, ZIJ gave a seminar titled “Temporal Variability of the Carbonate System in a Dynamic Coastal Estuary”. The talk highlighted recent work in collaboration with Dr. Dana Hunt on the temporal variability of pH, DIC and other physical, chemical and biological variables measured at the Duke Marine Laboratory on Pivers Island in Beaufort NC. The goals of the project are to determine short-time scale variability in ocean acidification and its relative importance compared to longer term changes projected for global climate change. Dr. Ilyina is a marine biogeochemical modeler and is developing computational tools used in integrated analyses of the climate system to determine how climate may change in the future and the mechanisms driving this change.
