As part of the Phytoplankton Of Warming Ocean Waters (POWOW) project, the Johnson Lab completed a transect in the Eastern Northern Pacific Ocean from Honolulu, Hawaii to San Diego, California. The cruise focused on the diversity, abundance and activity of Prochlorococcus using a variety of techniques, but we also characterizes the physical and chemical environment. In particular, we found remarkable gradients in nitrate, oxygen, ammonium, temperature, ocean acidity (pH) and other environmental variables that significantly affect the Prochlorococcus community. Several thousand additional samples were collected for later molecular characterization. The Johnson lab was augmented by seven Duke undergraduates working with the team as part of their independent study projects and collaborators from UT Knoxville, Colorado School of Mines, and the Marine Biological Laboratory. This cruise is the first in a series of three.
