Interested in Getting Involved? The Alumni Council is Now Accepting Applications!

Interested in Getting Involved? Apply to the Alumni Council
Deadline April 3rd!

The Nicholas School Alumni Council is now accepting applications to join the Council
for service beginning July 1, 2015.

The Nicholas School of the Environment Alumni Council is a volunteer-based group of NSOE alumni—including graduate alums, undergraduate alums, Ph.D. alums and DEL-alums—who are committed to advancing the mission of the Nicholas School, and serving as leaders within the alumni community, and ambassadors for the Nicholas School. The mission of the Alumni Council is to establish and maintain an active partnership with the Nicholas School of the Environment that advances the interests of the School and creates opportunities for alumni to participate fully in the life and vitality of the global community of Duke University. This group of alumni helps to provide leadership and manpower, in addition to feedback and ideas for alumni programming, drive development efforts among the alumni-body and actively participates in both alumni and student engagement efforts.

Member Responsibilities & Expectations:
MEMBER TERM LENGTH: The Alumni Council terms follow the fiscal calendar, July-June. Each term length is three years, and members can serve a maximum of two terms on the Alumni Council. Each member is evaluated at the end of their first term to make sure they are an actively engaged member of the committee, before being invited back to serve a second. Members are evaluated on a variety of information, including meeting attendance, participation—including, but not limited to subcommittee work, and their financial commitment to the Annual Fund.

MEETING ATTENDANCE: Attend twice yearly, on-campus Alumni Council Meetings hosted each Fall and Spring. Meetings typically start with dinner on a Friday evening, followed by our business meeting on Saturday morning through mid-afternoon. Due to special on campus events, meetings can be scheduled during the week or at a different time than usual, if deemed appropriate. While we recognize not everyone is going to be able to attend every single meeting, we do expect all members to attend in person for the majority of the meetings during the time on the Alumni Council. If a member is not going to be able to attend a meeting, it is their responsibility to communicate that to the Development and Alumni Relations Office, as well as the Alumni Council President at least three weeks prior to the meeting, as well as submit any necessary work/updates to their Subcommittee Chair in preparation for the meeting.

PARTICIPATION: The Alumni Council is a working committee, meaning each member is expected to remain active and engaged in between meetings. Council members are assigned to a subcommittee and within that subcommittee, are assigned specific tasks. Each member is responsible for staying engaged with their subcommittee leader and group members, communicating regarding progress made on their specific tasks and expected to work to achieve goals and metrics as outlined at the beginning of the fiscal year. Expect to commit at least one to two hours of work per week (will vary based on project and time of year) for Alumni Council work.

LEADERSHIP & ENGAGEMENT: Alumni Council members are a group of the Nicholas School of the Environment’s outstanding alumni. Members are expected to “lead by example” in all aspects of alumni life – for example, we encourage and expect Alumni Councils to be active members of the alumni body, attending events in their area and helping to promote the NSOE to other alumni. Alumni Council members are expected to engage with students when possible, whether it be by attending an on-campus student engagement event such as Career Perspective Day, or by attending a networking social in conjunction with a student event, such as the Duke Yale Career Fair.

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: Alumni Council members are expected to donate to the NSOE Annual Fund on a yearly basis, and at the leadership giving level of $300 per year. This amount can be either donated in full, or pledged over the course of the fiscal year. We ask Alumni Council members to do this, because you are viewed as advocates and leaders in the alumni community. It is hard to get our alumni to donate to the school when our alumni leaders are not donating themselves. Additionally, it is a great leverage point when trying to fundraising for the Annual Fund to be able to say we have 100% participation from our Alumni Council members.
