Roots & Reconnection: A Nicholas School Alumni Celebration in the Duke Forest

Reconnect, relax, and relive the memories of your time at the Nicholas School with classmates and some of our beloved faculty during our Friday gathering at the Duke Forest!

Live Music: Jam out with a local band, as we set the tone for an unforgettable evening.

Keg & Q: Raise a glass to memories and enjoy NC Barbecue (meat-eater and vegan options available) like old times.

Lawn Games & Activities: Engage in friendly competition with classic lawn games or simply unwind in the beauty of the forest.

Cost to attend (tentative):

  • Adults and children 13 and up: $25.00
  • Recent Alumni (2015 – 2025): $15.00

Fueling Minds: Lunch & Big Ideas in Ted-Talk Style

Join us at Grainger Hall for a lunch filled with connection, inspiration, and discovery. Network with peers and enjoy engaging TED-style talks by Nicholas School experts. During the program kids under 12 can become Science Explorers through hands-on activities led by Nicholas School students, leaving you free to enjoy the program.

12:30 pm – Check In, Networking & Lunch

Enjoy a delicious meal while catching up with old friends and making new connections.

1:15 pm – Environmental Research & Policy Spotlights

Hear TED-style presentations from Nicholas School experts who will explore how Duke delivers an expectational educational experience while executing cutting edge research and creating solutions that have both an immediate and long-term impact on our communities and our world.

Featured programs include:

  • Marine Innovators: Student Scholars Tackling Global Challenges, featuring Meagan Dunphy-Daly, Associate Dean for Experiential Education, Marine Science & Conservation, NSOE
  • From Idea to Impact: Duke’s Blueprint for Environmental Entrepreneurship featuring Professor Parker, Executive in Residence, Environmental Social Systems, NSOE
  • Floods, Fires, and the Future: Navigating Disaster Recovery with Science, featuring Betsy Albright PhD’09, Chair, Environmental Economics and Policy, NSOE
  • Education, Innovation, Impact: How the Nicholas School is Driving Change, featuring Lori S. Bennear, Stanback Dean of the Environment

*Kids’ Activities – Science Explorer: During the featured program, kids under 13 can explore fun science experiments led by Nicholas School students!

2:15 pm – Closing Remarks & Networking Time

2:30 pm – Optional Tour of Grainger Hall and West Campus with Nicholas School students. Estimated tour time is 15 minutes in Grainger Hall + 30 minutes around west campus.
