One of the Nicholas School’s greatest strengths is the willingness of our alumni to assist current students. A great way to get involved is through the school’s Alumni-in-Residence Program, which brings Nicholas and Duke graduates back to campus for 2-3 days to share their expertise and advice with students in workshops, classes and training sessions. The program, managed by the school’s Career & Professional Development Center brings alumni-in-residence from a broad range of environment-related careers to campus, and tailors their visits to optimize value for our students and our alumni guests.
“Students get a great deal out of interacting with our alumni and learning how the tools and knowledge learned in the classroom actually apply in the workplace,” says Assistant Dean Karen Kirchof. “And the alumni who have participated tell us they really enjoy the inquisitiveness of the students and the opportunity to share what they’ve learned.”
In March, alumna-in-residence Becca Madsen MEM’06 now a project manager at the Electric Power Research Institute in Texas, Becca shared insights from her job and talked about how her time at Nicholas has benefited her career. Here’s her talk on career paths and the value of tapping into the Nicholas School’s alumni network.
Becca and other grads give back to the Nicholas School community by volunteering their time and talent. From welcoming admitted students, to providing career advice, to serving as clients for master’s projects and hosting events, there are many ways to get involved.
