Stay connected to the school and fellow alumni

The Nicholas School hosts events throughout the year, both stateside and internationally, to bring together alumni of different ages and career stages to connect professionally and personally. In addition to our annual alumni reunion on campus, regional groups and networking socials offer great ways to connect. Science and Policy Communication Workshop – Duke in DC

June 9, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

Looking to improve how you communicate your science or policy work? Learn best practices from experts Karl Leif Bates, Director of Research Communications at Duke University and Jory Weintraub, Science Communication Program Director with the Duke Initiative for Science and Society.

Through your participation in this workshop, you will:

  1. Learn strategies for translating your body of work into a concise message, and practice crafting that message for clarity and brevity, with feedback from facilitators and peers;
  2. Via discussion and viewing of exemplary videos, explore ways to support your message through storytelling, metaphor, effective use of numbers/statistics, etc., and build these in to your message;
  3. Discuss jargon and strategies for identifying and avoiding it, and practice delivering your message (and elaborating on it in subsequent conversation) in a jargon-free way.

While this workshop is primarily intended to serve those working in STEM disciplines and policy fields, the concepts and strategies that will be introduced and practiced are broadly applicable to any professional who would like to improve their communication skills.

This workshop will certainly enhance your ability to communicate with colleagues/peers, but it is primarily intended to help you engage more effectively with broader, more diverse audiences, such as policy makers, the media, the general public, potential funders/philanthropists, the education community, friends-and-family, etc.

Registration fee per person includes light breakfast and coffee.

  • Current Duke students and recent Duke alumni (5 years out) – $12
  • Duke alumni and all other guests – $15
