I recently forged my own trail from <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/TBpGF\">Duke University (Durham, North Carolina) to Oregon State University (Corvallis, Oregon)<\/a> for a K.C. Donnelly Externship. And while I haven\u2019t been too worried about contracting cholera, I am seeing just how important working together with other people can be.<\/p>\n<p>K.C. Donnelly was a scientist associated with the Superfund Research Program who was dedicated to training young scientists and believed in the value of productive partnerships. Now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/research\/supported\/dert\/cris\/programs\/srp\/training\/donnelly\/index.cfm\">K.C. Donnelly Externships<\/a> are awarded in his honor to Superfund trainees that want to spend time at another lab doing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Translational_research\">translational<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transdisciplinarity\">transdisciplinary<\/a> research. As a Ph.D. student in the<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/ecotoxicologylab\/\"> Di Giulio lab<\/a> at Duke, I\u2019m normally doing research focused on understanding how titanium dioxide nanoparticles can react with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to possibly form degradation products that are more toxic than the original contaminants.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2126\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2126\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/superfund\/files\/2013\/09\/TiO2nanotube.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2126  \" alt=\"TiO2nanotube\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/superfund\/files\/2013\/09\/TiO2nanotube-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TiO2 nanotube, courtesy of Wikipedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Or, in English, I\u2019m investigating how nanoparticles can be used to remove contaminants from the environment. Do nanoparticles break down (or degrade) the original contaminant into a chemical that\u2019s safer or more toxic? How does light affect the process? I use the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/superfund\/files\/2013\/08\/Friend-Request-Accepted-P4.pdf\">zebrafish<\/a>, a small, striped freshwater fish that <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/superfund\/exposing-nemo\/\">other labs at Duke <\/a>use <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/superfund\/behavior-the-first-step\/\">as well<\/a> for Superfund research, as a model to compare undegraded PAHs to degraded PAHs.<\/p>\n<p>The Tanguay lab uses the zebrafish as well, which is great because after 4 years of working with them, I have grown very attached to my stripey friends. However, they do things a little differently than we do. They have <a href=\"http:\/\/tanguaylab.com\/Automation.html\">robots<\/a> (which kind of look like a souped-up sewing machine) that can automatically place eggs on plates and dose them with whatever chemical you are testing. After dosing the eggs, the robots screen them for deformities and perform behavioral tests. \u00a0I\u2019m learning how to use new equipment, new approaches and new laboratory techniques while I\u2019m here so that I can apply them to my research project at home in the Di Giulio lab.<\/p>\n<p>Not only am I getting to acquire new skills, but I\u2019m also getting to meet other grad students, postdocs, and scientists and form working relationships.
