DUSRC Scientists in the Spotlight

A team of DUSRC researchers – Dr. Nishad Jayasundara, Melissa Chernick, Dr. Ilaria Merutka, Samantha Phelps, and Dr. Emily Green – recently teamed up with the Durham Museum of Life and Science to create a video for the Scientist Spotlight series. The Jayasundara Lab studies how environmental change affects human and ecological health.

In the six minute clip, the team describes how their lab studies environmental stress, like pollution, heat, or low oxygen levels, and how it affects living things. Some of this work is done using microbes and some is done using killifish from the Elizabeth River in Virginia. The lab also studies the impacts of pollution on kidney disease and how even low levels of pollution can exacerbate kidney disease over time. Congratulations to the lab and the Museum of Life and Science for an outstanding example of science communication!
