As part of the 2026 SALA-Duke Summit on Climate and Sustainability, featuring former EPA Administrator Michael Regan, Community Engagement Core (CEC) Director Elizabeth Shapiro-Garza led a field trip to Catawba Trail Farm in Durham, NC. The farm is operated by Urban Community AgriNomics (UCAN), a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to, “to reduce food insecurity, reduce and reverse preventable health issues, increase academic success, and increase exposure to career opportunities in the field of agriculture.”
Dr. Shapiro-Garza, also an Associate Professor of the Practice of Environmental Policy & Management and Faculty Director for Community-Engaged Scholarship at the Nicholas School of the Environment, facilitated the trip for summit participants to showcase a local organization that is reducing food insecurity while also committing to community sustainability through agriculture.
