Update &#8211; June 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Webster from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cascadiaresearch.org\">Cascadia<\/a> flew back from Montana this week to work with us deploying more satellite tags on large odontocetes off Cape Hatteras.\u00a0 We were also fortunate to have <a href=\"http:\/\/publish.ucc.ie\/researchprofiles\/D026\/erogan\">Dr. Emer Rogan<\/a>, from University College Cork in Ireland, working with us for two days as part of her sabbatical visit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1362\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1362\" style=\"width: class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perfect working conditions at the shelf break<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been enjoying a few days of early summer weather with workable conditions at our field site, which is about 40 nautical miles from shore.\u00a0 It\u2019s a long two-hour commute to and from the shelf break, but the diversity and density of cetaceans out there make the trip Hatteras<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday we were able to deploy a location-only satellite tag on a large male pilot whale and obtain a biopsy sample (from the other side of the fin) to confirm the sex of the animal. \u00a0We also had a great encounter with a group of unusually friendly Risso\u2019s dolphins, with two animals repeatedly approaching the bow of the R\/V Barber.\u00a0 We were hoping to deploy a tag on one of these animals, but they were too quick and we were working in a pretty good chop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Risso&#8217;s dolphin off Cape Hatteras<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We had spectacular weather conditions on Sunday \u2013 glassy calm for much of the day \u2013 a perfect day to search for beaked whales.\u00a0 We found three groups of Cuvier\u2019s beaked whales, but were unable to relocate any of them after they dove.\u00a0 Trying to tag beaked whales involves a lot of time waiting for them at the surface as they can dive for 75 minutes or more.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1365\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1365\" style=\"width: 300px\" id=\"caption-attachment-1365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pilot whales logging at the surface in glassy conditions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We did manage to deploy three more tags on pilot whales on Sunday \u2013 two dive recorders and one location-only tag.\u00a0 Unfortunately one dive recorder was shed immediately but we have high hopes for the other two tags and we are still
