{"id":1248,"date":"2014-04-01T13:46:09","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T13:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/superpod.ml.duke.edu\/read\/?p=1248"},"modified":"2017-07-24T18:38:51","modified_gmt":"2017-07-24T18:38:51","slug":"international-court-of-justice-decision-on-whaling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/read\/2014\/04\/01\/international-court-of-justice-decision-on-whaling\/","title":{"rendered":"International Court of Justice Decision on Japanese Whaling in the Antarctic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/superpod.ml.duke.edu\/read\/files\/2014\/04\/ICJ-e1396359919493.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1249\" alt=\"ICJ\" src=\"http:\/\/superpod.ml.duke.edu\/read\/files\/2014\/04\/ICJ-300x55.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"55\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Monday, March 31st was a good day for whales, as the International Court of Justice ruled for Australia in the case it had brought against Japan regarding special permit catches of Antarctic whales. \u00a0The decision, which Japan has said it will adhere to, means an end to the Japanese &#8216;scientific whaling&#8217; program in the Antarctic, known as JARPA II, which has killed more than 3,600 whales. \u00a0In the decision, the majority of justices argued that the killing of whales in this program was not <em>for the purposes<\/em> of scientific research, agreeing with many independent observers that this was, in reality, a thinly disguised commercial harvest. \u00a0 You can read the decision <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/docket\/files\/148\/18136.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is an important decision which, understandably, has generated a lot of media interest.
