Duke Forest Welcomes New Leadership, Bids Farewell to Forest Legend, Judd Edeburn

This spring brings more than its usual changes to Duke Forest, and we have several announcements and staff updates to share.

After over 35 years of exceptional stewardship, Judd Edeburn has retired as Resource Manager of the Duke Forest.  He will remain on staff through the end of the year in various capacities, but Duke Forest is engaged in a leadership transition.  Following a national search, Sara Childs, our Program Director for the last several years, has been selected as the next Director.  Sara’s leadership promises to continue the tradition established by Judd, but as you might guess from the title change, the staff structure will be slightly reorganized.  For this reason we are currently looking to fill a position for a Forest Operations Manager.

We have also recently welcomed a new staff member, Bradley Shewmaker, as the Grounds and Maintenance Supervisor following George Pendergraft’s retirement in January.  George is currently with us on a part-time basis to keep us up and running through this transition.  Beverly Burgess, our Administrative Assistant, is still the one taking your calls and running the office from day to day, and Mike Burke, our Forestry Technician, remains our everyday boots-on-the-ground for forest management activities.  Lastly, we are fortunate to have Nick Biemiller on as our Forest Management Intern through October of this year.  He continues to play a major role in implementing the Recreation Study, among other projects.  So while this season brings a lot of change to our little office, we remain committed to the teaching and research mission and to the excellent stewardship of the Forest and its resources.
