Class of 2017 Grads Become our Newest Alumni!

On May 13, 166 master’s students in our environmental management, forestry, science and Duke Environmental Leadership programs, along with 40 doctoral students and 55 undergrads with environmental majors, graduated from the Nicholas School and received their diplomas.

At the MEM/PhD ceremony, led by Dean Jeff Vincent, graduates, friends and family were treated to words of wisdom from Dr. Pablo Arenas, director general of the Mexican National Fisheries Institute; Nancy Kelly, the Nic School’s director of conference and special events and a much-loved student advisor; alum Charles Adair, MEM’10, program manager at the Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative; and fellow graduate Laura Marie Davis, MEM’17.

During the NSOE Recognition Ceremonies, four graduating students were recognized for singular academic achievements:

  • Cooper Rosin, PhD’17, Dean’s Award for outstanding graduate student manuscript
  • Mikia Lynn Weidenbach, MEM’17, Virlis Fischer Award for highest academic achievement among our professional graduate students
  • Undergraduates Donovan Loh, Sara LaBoskey Award for personal integrity and academic excellence; and John McDermott, Thomas J. Laska Memorial Award for outstanding achievement and promise of future success in the earth and ocean sciences
