Session 1: Emerging Environmental Policy Issues in China (Presentations and Panel Discussion)

Join us for an in-depth look at the environmental challenges facing China today, and the increasing public and government awareness of environmental impacts on both human health and the economy. Panelists will present some of their ongoing work on environmental policy research in China.

Panelists and topics to be covered are:

Benjamin van Rooij, UC Irvine Law School — “China’s New Environmental Regulators

Joanna Lewis (T’97), Associate Professor, Science, Technology and International Affairs, Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University –“Examining China’s Role in Global Clean Energy Technology Development”

Shanjun Li (PhD’07), Assistant Professor, Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, Cornell University — “Air Pollution and Traffic congestion: Policy Options in China’s Transportation Sector”

“Environmental Effects of Shale Gas Development and Hydraulic Fracturing,” with Avner Vengosh

Following the panel discussion of Chinese environmental policy issues and clean energy development, Avner Vengosh, Professor of Geochemistry and Water Quality, will take a closer look at the environmental effects of shale gas development and hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), including lessons we have learned in the U.S. and implications for new developments in China.

Alumni Tour of the new Duke Environment Hall and Self-Guided Campus Walking Tour

Take a guided tour of the Nicholas School’s beautiful new home, Duke Environment Hall. The 70,000 square foot building features the highest sustainable features and technologies, and meets or exceeds the criteria for LEED platinum certification. Afterward, grab a “New to Duke” guide and explore some of the latest additions to Duke’s campus.

Nicholas School Triangle Alumni Social and Dean Townsend Welcome

The Nicholas School and N.C. Triangle Alumni Network are jointly hosting this evening social for local and visiting alums featuring Dean Alan Townsend. Come out to Environment Hall to explore the new building, catch up with fellow alumni as well as incoming Triangle Alumni Network Coordinator Gene Stroup (MEM ’99), and meet the School’s new dean!
