Raleigh) on Friday and spent all day Saturday learning about some great microbiology projects going on throughout North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/ncasm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-565 alignnone\" title=\"ncasm\" (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ASM conference was held at the headquarters of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sigmaxi.org\/index.shtml\">Sigma Xi<\/a> academic society this year.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sigmaxi.org\/about\/center\/index.shtml\">Sigma Xi Center<\/a> is a beautiful building and we all enjoyed spending our day there.\u00a0 The highlight was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sigmaxi.org\/about\/center\/hall.shtml\">Hall of Honor<\/a>, a tall glass hallway where a large array of plaques commemorates the members of Sigma Xi who have won the Nobel Prize. \u00a0\u00a0Luckily, this was where we got to hold our poster session!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/posters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-568\" title=\"posters\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/posters.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson\/files\/2012\/10\/posters.jpg 720w, https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson\/files\/2012\/10\/posters-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day we had the opportunity to listen to a series of talks about a wide variety of topics.\u00a0 These talks covered the mass production of nematodes for use as a pesticide agent, the genetics of bacterial-based infections, the use of the equine herpes virus to destroy cancer cells, the importance of manganese in Appalachian cave ecosystems, and the spread of foodborne pathogens.\u00a0\u00a0 However, my favorite talk by far was the one given by our own Yajuan Lin (perhaps I\u2019m a bit biased).\u00a0 Yajuan presented her new research in a talk titled, \u201cEstimating the Genotype Specific <em>in situ<\/em> Activity of <em>Prochlorococcus<\/em> from rRNA Content and Cell Size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/yajuan3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-569\" title=\"yajuan3\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/yajuan3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"433\" (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We all thought she did a great job!\u00a0 She even got a big round of applause at the end of her talk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/yajuan2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-570\" title=\"yajuan2\" (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Johnson Lab also presented two posters at the ASM conference.\u00a0 Maria de Oca presented her work in a poster titled, \u201cTemperature and Nutrient Concentrations Determine <em>Prochlorococcus<\/em> Genetic Diversity in the Surface Pacific Ocean.\u201d\u00a0 Maria\u2019s work identified two distinct communities of <em>Prochlorococcus<\/em> located in the western Pacific equatorial warm pool and the eastern Pacific equatorial cold tongue.\u00a0 In the pictures below she\u2019s talking to some big wigs at the conference, including one of the keynote speakers!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/mariaall.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-588 alignleft\" title=\"mariaall\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/mariaall.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"643\" height=\"290\" (max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I presented my work in a poster titled, \u201cInfluence of Ocean Temperature on <em>Prochloroccocus<\/em> Genetic Diversity Gradients in the North Pacific.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I used two cruises in the North Pacific to identify regions of high <em>Prochlorococcus<\/em> genetic diversity.\u00a0 Much to my surprise, I won the \u201cBest Poster\u201d award at the ASM conference!\u00a0\u00a0 I guess the late nights and many many cups of coffee that were consumed in the process of finishing this poster were worth it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/alyseall.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-589 alignleft\" title=\"alyseall\" (max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Johnson Lab was also joined by our collaborative lab at the ASM conference.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/oceanography.ml.duke.edu\/hunt\/\">The Hunt Lab<\/a> presented three posters on the microbial and environmental dynamics of a local estuary, marine bacterioplankton DNA extraction, and seasonal partitioning of <em>Vibrio<\/em> populations.\u00a0 We were glad to have Katy, Chris, and Charmaine there with us!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/johnson-staging\/files\/2012\/10\/huntlab.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-587\" title=\"huntlab\"
