The Johnson Lab was joined by local science teacher Jeff Carr from Camp Le Jeune High School and participated in Ocean Sampling Day, which is part of a coordinated effort to characterize oceans from around the globe on the summer solstice. Our participation was part of an on-going ocean acidification time-series (PICO) in collaboration with Dr. Dana Hunt at DUML. Dr. Johnson and Mr. Carr sampled for pH, DIC as well as many other physical, chemical and biological variables that are important for this environment. Our long term goal is to understand coastal environmental variability, the mechanisms that drive it, the impacts it has on coastal ocean ecosystems and to make management recommendations for increasing ocean acidity. The PICO time-series is also part of the International Ocean Carbon-UNESCO Biogeochemical Time Series network. Mr. Carr will be joining the Johnson team who will be leading an open ocean expedition in July to study the effects of climate change on phytoplankton and other members of the open ocean ecosystems (POWOW).
