Hooding Ceremony

The Graduate School’s PhD Hooding Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. at the Durham Convention Center.  The Graduate School will host one ceremony for all PhD graduates. This is a ticket only event, however, PhD candidates and faculty members WILL NOT need a ticket. If you are the primary advisor of a student who recently graduated (September or December 2018) or will be graduating in May 2019, your student may ask you to participate in the 2019 PhD Hooding Ceremony.

The PhD Hooding Ceremony is in addition to, and does not replace, the university-wide Commencement Ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, May 12th.

Official PhD diplomas will be distributed during the hooding ceremony on Saturday, May 11th at the Durham Convention Center. Students who do not attend will have the option to pick up their diplomas at The Graduate School the week after the ceremony, or have it mailed to them. Consequently, PhD students will not receive their official diplomas at departmental ceremonies. For purposes of the departmental live ceremony, you may choose to have the PhD students receive a blank diploma cover. More information will be provided in 2019.
