This seminar will introduce the framework of “culturally-responsive soil science” and discuss its implications for civic empowerment and environmental justice in marginalized communities. The application of this framework in African-American and Indigenous communities will also be recounted.
About the Speaker: Dr. Eric Britt Moore (Britt) is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Protection at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Dr. Moore directs the UNCW Environmental Soil Science Laboratory with research projects focused on plant-soil interactions, soil water flux, soil carbon dynamics, and soil remediation.
Britt’s professional experiences include soil science research at the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment, lecturer of agronomy and environmental science at Iowa State University, agricultural outreach specialist for Iowa State University, and high school science teacher.
Britt has also works extensively to promote civic empowerment through youth and adult training programs centered on science literacy, environmental justice, and food autonomy.
Britt’s academic training includes a B.S. in Agricultural Science from Truman State University, M.S. in Crop Production & Physiology and M.S. in Sustainable Agriculture from Iowa State University, and a Ph.D. specializing in Soil Physics from Iowa State University.
Britt is a Chicago native that enjoys travel, great coffee, local foods, biking, photography, sci-fi and horror movies.
