Motivation
Extreme storms, drought, sea level rise, pollution, and environmental degradation pervasively threaten natural and human communities. Reversing loss and restoring ecosystems is a grand challenge that motivates a wide array of scientists, students, and community members around the world, especially here at Duke.
For restoration to answer this challenge, we must act quickly and innovate. The spectrum of participants must expand to include engineers, microbiologists, machinists, horticulturalists, economists, policy makers and integrators. Strategies must be specific to targets and consider community and cultural needs.
Vision
Our vision is for the Duke Nicholas School of the Environment to become a leader in this field so that ecosystem restoration can become a realistic recovery strategy for places and species facing intensifying global stress.
Through the Duke RESTORE initiative, faculty will provide the research and expertise to promote better understanding of integrated ecosystem restoration and thus play a key role in enhancing human and natural resilience while our students will catalyze the ideas and bring their exceptional skills to the workforce to implement restoration techniques and strengthen the connections necessary for progress.
