It’s almost the new year! You may be like us, wondering how 2016 went by so fast. It seems like every year has us scratching our heads saying ‘wait, what just happened?’.  There’s probably plenty of places you wanted go, things you wanted do, and people you wanted to see but didn’t get the chance. We definitely understand if the same circumstances circled around your career.

However, it’s never too late! If your goal this upcoming year is to gain that promotion you’ve been wanting or embarking on a new experience, the best way to reach your career goals is to invest in yourself. Whether it’s continuing your education, taking a skills-based course, attending a conference or other networking events, make a dedicated plan to take time for yourself. According to The Economic Times, two of the top five ways to spring clean your career are networking and staying “on top of new trends and technologies through constant reskilling and training”.

Deb Wojcik in the Nicholas School Career & Professional Development Center shares that “being a lifelong learner is a commitment—a most worthwhile one. It’s important to periodically reflect on where you are in your career, where you want to be, and what you need to do to get there. Has new technology emerged that could make you more productive or marketable? Is there a new topic or skill set that has become part of the conversation in your field? Talk to members of your network, grow that network, take a course, attend a conference… There are many ways to invest in yourself. Figuring out where you can add value—and continue to grow as a professional—will not only help you be successful in your job and chosen career path, it will help you be more happy doing it.”

Employers love to see that you are continuously finding ways to grow in your expertise and keeping up with the ever-changing world. So make your 2017 new year resolution not only be a new you, but the best you!
