MASTIF is a network that relies on networks.  National Parks and National Forests, NSF-sponsored sites, biological field stations, and non-profits like The Nature Conservancy collectively span the most stunning landscapes, while offering many of the most critical habitats on the continent.  Without the generous support of our hosts this ambitious network would not have been possible.   Paragraphs that follow identify key host institutions.

The National Ecological Observation Network (NEON), constructed by the National Science Foundation and now administered by Battelle Corporation, includes sites where we have initiated new sampling,  adding to NEON vegetation structure plots (DSNY, HARV, NIWO, OSBS, SOAP, TALL, TREE, UKFS, UNDE, WREF, YELL).  Sampling at some MASTIF sites predates NEON, either by us (GRSM, HARV), in collaboration with Mike Dietze (BART, UNDE), or by others in the MASTIF network (Brockway, Bragg, Guo’s network includes JERC and OSBS;  Veblen and Andrus at NIWO). As discussed on site pages, NEON does not own sites, but rather facilitates research through their permits from host organizations.

Long-term Ecological Research (LTER), also an NSF program, has supported MASTIF sites at BONA/BNZ, CWT, HARV, NIWO, and SEV.

The Nature Conservancy has accommodated us at Disney Wilderness Preserve (DSNY), Callaway Forest Preserve (CALL), and the Green Swamp Preserve (GRSW).  Other non-profits that combine research and land stewardship include Hastings Natural History Reservation (HNHR), Jones Ecological Research Center (JERC), and Tall Timbers Research Station (TTRS).

Smithsonian Institution facilities at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) host MASTIF sites.

National Parks and National Monuments include Capulin Mountain (CMNM), Great Smoky Mountains (GRSM), Mount Ranier (MORA), Yellowstone (YELL), and Yosemite (YOSE).

National Forests accommodate sites in the MASTIF network at Apalachicola (APNF), Croatan (CROA), Gifford Pinchot (WREF), Kisatchie (KINF), Pisgah (PISG), Sequoia (SEQU), Sierra (SOAP), and Talladega (TALL).

University stations include Duke Forest (DUKE), Harvard Forest (HARV), Mountain Lake Biological Station (MLBS), Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (NIWO), University of Kansas Field Station (UKFS), Ordway-Swisher Biological Station (OSBS),  Treehaven (TREE),  Tyson Research Center (WUSL), University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS), and University of Notre Dame Research Center (UNDE).

USFS Experimental Forests include Bartlett Experimental Forest (BART), Bent Creek Experimental Forest (BCEF), Coweeta Hydrologic Lab (CWT), Escambia Experimental Forest (EEF), and Wind River Experimental Forest (WREF).

Additional MASTIF sites are hosted by state forests and military bases (EAFB, FBMB).

The table below lists sites with acronyms used in maps and tables.  The survey column indicates the research group responsible for the study, including UMICH (Ines Ibanez), Franklin (Jerry Franklin), BU (Mike Dietze and Istem Fer), LTER at BONA (archived by Jill Johnstone), USFS (Dale Brockway and colleagues for longleaf pine, Katie Greenberg for oaks), UQUAM (Yassine Messaoud and Yves Bergeron), Redmond (Miranda Redmond and colleagues), WUSL (Jonathan Myers), UWASH (Janneke HilleRisLambers), UUTAH (Jim Lutz), and UC (Tom Veblen and Robbie Andrus).  Years are updated to the most recent year thus far assimilated into the analysis.  Sites without seeds are crop count data sets.
