Science and Art at the Moment of Discovery brings 6 artists to sea with 18 scientists on a research expedition that will use the tethered ROV Jason to explore mud volcanoes of the Barbados accretionary wedge. Research expeditions on global class vessels are mind-blowing experiences, but the process of discovery – the excitement and thrill and intellectual gambit of piecing together a fire-hose of information to make the next decision about where and how to look, what to sample when – is difficult to capture in words. Six artists who work in a variety of media will be challenged to create a work or body of work that captures this Moment of Discovery.
Karen Jacobsen is a water color artist and veteran of deep-sea research cruises with me.
Mary Edna Fraser is a batik artist who has maintained a long-term science-art collaboration with Professor Emeritus Orrin Pilkey of Duke University.
Natasha Kermani is an NYC film producer, musician, composer.
Sharon Moise, native of St Lucia, works in acrylics and is an art student in Barbados.
Natalie Minik and Jolene Mok are students in the inaugural class of Duke University’s new MFA degree program in Experimental and Documentary Arts.
