SeaGlider records dolphins off the NC coast

SeaGlider performance trials in the lab.

The Nowacek lab successfully deployed a digital acoustic monitor (DMON) on a SeaGlider.

Working with iRobot’s Maritime Division, the Nowacek lab successfully deployed a digital acoustic monitor (DMON) on a SeaGlider off the NC coast.  As part of a university-industry partnership, the Duke Marine Lab and iRobot are working together to develop new oceanographic sensors and instruments.

During the 2011 mission, the unit recorded some dolphins, though the main focus of the mission was to test the DMON, it’s communications with the glider, and the noises made by the glider so appropriate planning and filtering can be done on future missions.
