There are a lot of dates, deadlines, events, and forms to remember!  All PhD students, regardless of their program, follow The Graduate School’s dates and requirements, so be sure to bookmark their page!

Academic Events & Deadlines

August 31, 2023Departmental Affiliation Form due for rising 2nd years

October 15, 2023– Application deadline for December 2023 graduation via DukeHub

November 13, 2023, 5:00 pm Eastern– Deadline for initial submission of ETD (Electronic Thesis or Dissertation) to ProQuest for December 2023 graduation

November 27, 2023– Final day to defend Dissertation or Thesis for December 2023 graduation

November 30, 2023, 11:59 pm EasternApplication Deadline for Fall 2024 Admissions into ITEHP

December 11, 2023, 3:00 pm Eastern– Deadline for final Submission of ETD via ProQuest for December 2023 graduation. All signed final exam cards must be submitted to The Graduate School by 5:00 pm.

February 1, 2024– Application deadline for May 2024 graduation via DukeHub

March 20, 2024, 5:00 pm Eastern– Deadline for initial submission of ETD (Electronic Thesis or Dissertation) via ProQuest for May 2024 graduation.

April 3, 2024– Final deadline to defend your dissertation for May 2024 graduation

April 17, 2024, 3:00 pm Eastern– Deadline for final Submission of ETD via ProQuest for May 2024 graduation. All signed final exam cards must be submitted to The Graduate School by 5:00 pm.

Committee Approval Form: Due 30 days before preliminary exam

Form for Certification Meeting (ENV PhD Program students): This in-person meeting of the student and the proposed thesis committee must occur at least one month prior to the preliminary exam. It should typically happen in the second year of study. The purpose of this meeting is to officially form the thesis committee.

Preliminary Exam Report: Faculty committee must sign this form after preliminary exam

SACS Form: Each of your committee members must complete the appropriate SACS form (this form is ENV-specific) for both preliminary exam or defense. Please email Jessica if you need this form.

Graduate School Conference Travel Grant Application: The Graduate School provides up to $525 for domestic and $700 for international travel for advanced students who have passed all parts of the preliminary exam and are presenting a paper or poster at a national conference. 

Nicholas School Conference Funding/Professional Travel Grant: Professional development grants are designed to fund activities that provide a value-added “professional” experience to the student’s academic training; grants will be considered for presentations of papers or posters at conferences, meetings or symposia for students who have completed their preliminary examinations.
