The Nicholas School executive education’s marine planning team has been busy this year offering Marine Planning Advancement Training (MPAT) workshops in a variety of formats.

Instructor and curriculum designer Mike Barrett (MEM ’11) returns once again this fall to lead the online version of the course.  Registration is now open for this course, which will take place October 10 – December 16 2016.  Participants from across the globe meet weekly for collaborative, interactive assignments, and then listen to recorded lectures on their own time during the week.  This popular “flipped classroom” model allows for more effective use of synchronous meeting time to encourage the peer-to-peer learning that is so valuable to marine planning professionals.  Mike also co-led 2-day in-person courses this year in Washington, DC (March, 2016) and Miami, FL (May, 2016).

Nicholas School staff member Sarah Phillips teamed up with Sarah Pautzke, the Hawaii-Pacific Regional Planning Body Executive Secretary, to offer a focus group that expanded on common workshop themes at the recent IUCN World Conservation Congress meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Sarah Pautzke also co-led the 2-day workshop held in Portland, OR in February, 2016.

Participants from the West Coast and Pacific regional planning bodies met in Portland, Oregon in February 2016 for a 2-day MPAT training.

The core MPAT curriculum, derived from global best practices and featuring interactive and innovative educational styles, is designed for professionals involved in coastal management at all experience levels in the practice of marine planning.
