Request to Change Program Area of Study

Prior to the fall semester, new students may request a change in their program area of study. The summer deadline to request a change in your program area of study is May 5.  Advisor consent is not needed for summer change requests as the coursework advisors will not be assigned until shortly before fall Orientation. During the summer, in order to request a change in your program area of study, send an email to e.love@duke.edu. Your request should include a reason for the change. Also, you must acknowledge whether or not you have taken (or plan to take) the required and/or recommended prerequisites for the program area that you wish to switch into by completing this form.

After the summer deadline, new students may request a change in their program area of study during orientation and up until the end of the first year of enrollment. The student must obtain their coursework advisor’s consent on the program change request form, which is available at the advising web pages. Approval or denials are granted by the Program Chair for each concentration. In some but not all cases, a new academic advisor will be assigned to the student.

Interested students must provide a reason for the program area change requests directly on the program change request form.  Students are encouraged to highlight academic and career benefits for the change in their program area.  Students are further encouraged to refer to the list of required and recommended prerequisites for the new concentration (or program area of study) prior to submitting a request form.  Remember students may not enroll in the fall with more than one required prerequisite deficiency. Priority will be granted to those students who have already met the prerequisite requirements for the program area that they seek to move into. Note: Students may not formally pursue two program areas of study within the same NSOE degree.

Add the MEM or MF degree

Students who are interested in adding the Master of Forestry degree may do so either pre- or post-matriculation. This also applies to Master of Forestry students wishing to add the MEM degree. Remember students may only enroll in the fall with no more than one required prerequisite deficiency.

Prior to the fall semester, new students may request to add the Master of Forestry degree to their academic career.  The summer deadline is also May 5.  Advisor consent/form is not needed for summer requests as the coursework advisors will not be assigned until shortly before fall Orientation. In order to add the MF or MEM degree to your academic career, send an email to e.love@duke.edu. Your request should include a reason for the change. Also, you must acknowledge whether or not you have taken (or plan to take) the required and/or recommended prerequisites for the program area that you wish to add by completing this form.

After matriculation, completed requests forms should be returned to the Student Services. After matriculation, students may only add either the Master of Environmental Management (MEM) or Master of Forestry (MF) degree by submitting a degree add form signed by forestry Program Chair. Students interested in adding a separate professional degree outside of the Nicholas School of the Environment must submit a formal application for admission directly to the school/department or program.
